Chapter Update: Surgical Site Infection

In our latest content update, Donald E. Fry, MD revisits our chapter on Surgical Site Infection (SSI), which continues to be a major source of morbidity, economic cost, and even death in surgery patients. Important new coverage topics include:

  • The new SSI prediction model developed by the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN)
  • The impact of electronic medical records on SSI surveillance
  • Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT), a newer method in the prevention of infection in both closed and open surgical wounds
  • Pressure irrigation of open wounds before closure, or as adjunctive therapy for open wounds not primarily closed
