Abstract

The infection control risk assessment and mitigation processes are important entry points for the active participation by the infection preventionist into the design and oversight of healthcare construction and renovation projects to provide input addressing infection risks to patients, healthcare personnel, and visitors. This chapter addresses the role of infection prevention in the healthcare facility environment during construction and renovation. Following the steps of the infection control risk assessment and mitigation processes, it addresses issues for consideration during the project design phase, construction phase, and before moving into newly constructed or renovated spaces. The background and regulatory aspects of the infection control risk assessment and risk mitigation recommendations processes are described as well as the administrative organization common to healthcare construction and renovation projects.
